June 18th in the Great Chamber of Birmingham University will see a historic celebration of the signing of Magna Carta, with keynote speaker Joshua Rozenberg.
Supporting contributions will be from Lady Justice Mancur DBE, Birmingham Law Society’s Mushtaq Khan and The Chancellor of Hereford Cathedral, the home of one of the orginal Magna Cartas.
Magna Carta has been Britain’s most valuable export to the rest of the world. It has transcended barriers of language and culture as the ideas of freedom and justice have become almost part of the genetic structure of humankind. It has not only stood the test of time, but has a potency which has seen off hundreds of attempts at annulment, repeal, modification and suspension by successive monarchs and governments. Magna Carta is being celebrated throughout 2015 – @MagnaCarta800th
Magna Carta’s best days lie ahead. With the power of social networking and the internet to spread them, the principles underpinning Magna Carta will no doubt continue to have huge influence wherever freedom is under attack.
The Internet and instant worldwide personal communication are emblematic of the fluttering pennants of the twenty-five barons who waited impatiently for their despotic king to round the last bend in the river on a summer’s day in 1215.
This is the only formal event in Birmingham to celebrate the signing of the document that established the foundation of law and justice in Britain and much of the rest of the world as well. I hope you can attend what promises to be an informative and enjoyable evening.
